LPP wants Pacquiao as standard-bearer

COTABATO CITY: The Labor Party of the Philippines (LPP), also known as the Workers and Peasants Party (WPP), on Monday declared that it wants Sen. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao as its standard-bearer in the 2022 elections.Prof. Oscar Morado, LPP senior vice president for operations and party spokesman, said Pacquiao has “leadership clothed with decency and transcendence.””You bear the pivotal light beam in this journey. The Workers and Peasants Party at its nexus is the repository of the laboring class. Without an iota of doubt, you are the quintessential bearer of the Labor Party,” the party said in a statement issued a day after the Filipino champ was defeated by Yordenis Ugas of Cuba, failing to win back the World Boxing Association title. The LPP said the whole country is proud of Pacquiao despite his stunning defeat.”The country is proud of you. Your loss is a pause for the future. The party is fully in high gear to quarterback your run for the presidency,” it said.Morado said the country is in a state of stupor or “extreme apathy.””To say that we are a total mess is an understatement. We need genuine change in leadership. A Labor government that will define the aspirations for peace, unity, trust, transparency in governance, progress and competitiveness,” he added.Pacquiao on Sunday said he will announce his plans for 2022 in September. The senator was ousted as president of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) party in July following a protracted dispute with other officials and members of the party. He was replaced by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as party president. Pacquiao had insisted that the election of new party officers was illegal because the assembly was not approved by him.President Rodrigo Duterte is the chairman of the PDP-Laban.The faction in the party, led by Cusi, earlier claimed that Pacquiao had been in talks with other political parties to prepare a back-up plan in case the senator will not be picked as the PDP-Laban’s candidate for president.Last month, party officials and members endorsed the tandem of Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go and Duterte as candidate for president and vice president, respectively, in 2022Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. on Monday refused to comment on Pacquiao’s statement that he will announce his political plans for 2022 next month.”Wala po (There’s none),” Roque, who is being considered as one of the senatorial bets of the PDP-Laban, said.”Karapatan ng Pilipino na mahalal at tumakbo (It’s the right of a Filipino to run and be elected),” he added.WITH CURRIE CATOR
