Haiti Rattled by Massive 7.2 Earthquake, ‘High Casualties’ Expected

via REUTERSA major earthquake measuring 7.2 in magnitude struck western Haiti at 8:30 a.m. local time on Saturday morning, sending people into the streets and causing major damage to buildings. Within an hour of the tremor the U.S. Geological Survey estimated “thousands of fatalities” and “tens of thousands of injuries in poor mountainous communities.” The USGS added that “High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread.”French-language newspaper Le Nouvelliste further reported on Saturday that “The majority of hotels and churches on the south coast of Haiti, which are often the most important buildings in cities, have collapsed or suffered significant damage.” Additionally, the Miami Herald reported, Haiti’s director of civil protection reported at least 225 people dead, with that number expected to rise throughout the evening on Saturday.Read more at The Daily Beast.
